What are Dental Implants?
A missing tooth is ugly. Covering it up with dentures can lead to some embarrassing situations, making it difficult to talk or eat or slipping out completely. A bridge may not slip, but the two teeth surrounding the missing tooth will have to be damaged to make room for the bridge.
San Diego’s premier Implant Dentist, Dr. Safarian, has a solution: dental implants
. The implant is a screw-like surgical component that is installed into the jawbone. A crown is then attached to the implant to replace the missing tooth. The benefits are obvious: you don’t get any slippage with an implant, and none of the surrounding teeth have to be damaged for the implant to fit.
We use CoDiagnostiX, which is advanced 3D-imaging software that helps with individual dental implant cases to confirm that each candidate has a strong enough jawbone to go ahead with the procedure.
Benefits of Dental Implants
Dental implants interface with the jawbone, making them stronger than other missing teeth solutions. Afterwards, you can eat popcorn, caramel, steak; the chewiest food you can find is fine. Another benefit is that dental implants fill in the root space that used to be occupied by the natural tooth, keeping the jawbone strong.
Conversely, a bridge or set of dentures looks fine but sweeps the real problem under the rug. The gap between roots is not filled, and the jawbone underneath deteriorates. When the jawbone crumbles away, the result is an unattractive sunken-jaw look.
What you Should Know about Dental Implants
You should be aware that dental implants are not immediate solutions. Since you’re fusing the device to your jawbone, everything takes a little time to gel. Specifically, it takes the average person about 3 months for the bone to heal properly and become strong enough to support the crown above. During this time, you can wear a set of dentures or partials to cover up the gap.
Also, not everyone is a candidate for the implant procedure. Most patients are approved, but there are some that don’t have jawbones strong enough to support the implant. The patients that don’t qualify usually have the same risk factors, including heavy smoking, alcohol use, and certain chronic diseases that make their jawbones weaker and thus less likely to be a qualified candidate for a dental implant.
Everyone wants a great smile, but it’s all too easy in our busy lives to neglect our oral health. Coffee and wine stain, you forget to brush for a couple days and the plaque hardens into tartar, cavities develop, a backyard game of football knocks one of your teeth out… it happens to all of us. With dental implants, as well as any additional treatments that might be able to help you, Dr. Safarian will give you the full, straight, and white smile of your dreams.
