Sedation Dentistry

If you freak out at the thought of the dentist then you should try sedation dentistry. Well, it is not always that you feel bad about going to a dentist sometimes it is also about tooth sensitivity, fear of facing toothache or just the fear of being at the dental clinic. The fear may come from your previous experience or it may just be pure phobia. But irrespective of the reasons, it is a fact that you cannot ignore your dental hygiene. It is also a fact that ignoring dental issues will only make them worse, thus, creating further disturbing complications. At, Irresistible Smiles, Dr. Safarian offers sedation dentistry for such patients.

First, we would like to give you an idea about the types of sedation dentistry techniques:

  • Moderate Sedation procedure
  • Minimal Sedation procedure
  • Deep sedation procedure
  • General Anesthesia

Let’s take a detailed look at the sedation dentistry procedures offered at Irresistible Smiles:

Oral sedation:

There are two types of oral sedation techniques. The first is the minimal oral sedation and the second is the moderate oral sedation.

Anxiety-pill sedation: This is a minimal sedation procedure where-in the patient is given an anxiety pill to so that he/she feels drowsy. The pill is usually given to the patient about 30 to 40 minutes before the dental procedure. Generally, the patient is given Halcion.

Moderate sedation: Sometimes, a bigger dose is given if the patient still feels the pain. This is called moderate oral sedation. During moderate sedation, the patient sometimes falls asleep. However, the he or she can be easily awakened with a simple pat or shake. The only thing to keep in mind is when the patient comes for a dental visit, he or she must bring the driver with him/her. This is particularly recommended for patients, who need moderate sedation. Usually, the effect of the sedative will wear off by the next morning.

Inhaled minimal sedation:

Dr. Safarian is certified in oral sedation administration. At Irresistible Smiles, Nitrous oxide is also used as a sedative for performing dental procedures. Nitrous oxide is also known as “laughing gas”. Patients are made to inhale minimal amount of this gas so that they feel relaxed, pleasant, warm and happy. Once your dental procedure is completed, you can drive home by yourself as this gas does not cause a long term effect.

What is Nitrous Oxide?

The famous laughing gas is an effective and safe sedative. It is calms down the patient’s anxiety and fears. The patient also does not experience pain when the dentistry treatment is on. A mask is placed on the patient’s nose before administering nitrous oxide. One big benefit of this gas is that it decreases the gag reflex that can create problems when Dr. Safarian is giving you dental treatment. Breathing can be done normally and the patient gets a relaxing feeling in about a 2-3 minutes.
